Abortion access sought

Greymouth reporter The West Coast Hospital Board will seek access to the abortion services of neighbouring boards — Canterbury and Nelson — for West Coast women. The board, meeting this week, decided by eight votes to five to instruct the medical superintend-ent-in-chief, Dr Brian Weston, to begin negotiations. The board rescinded by nine votes to four a resolution in September saying that no further action would be taken on abortion referral and counselling.

Both motions were moved by a board member and Medical Officer of Health, Dr Christine Robertson, who said indications were that 70 West Coast women had legal grounds for termination but, because of the present financial situation of the board, they were unable to be offered that service on the Coast. “I believe that it is something we should try to negotiate with contiguous boards,” she said.
