Ram washes out cricket

NZPA-Reuter Hobart The first day of the four-day cricket match between England and Tasmania was abandoned today without a ball being 'bowled because the ground was unfit. Heavy rain on Wednesday saturated the pitch, making it impossible to prepare the wicket in time.

Ground staff worked on it from daybreak but were forced to admit that they could not get it up to standard.

The umpires, Steve Randell and David Gregg, inspected the ground after lunch and after conferring with both teams, announced there would be no play. Meanwhile, the English wicket-keeper, Bruce French, was admitted to hospital for further tests on a chest complaint.

In Adelaide on Wednesday, French, aged 27, was distressed after experiencing breathing difficulties.

England’s manager, Peter Lush, took him to hospital there for a cardiograph examination which apparently did not reveal any heart problems.

The England team is in Hobart for its match against Tasmania and Mr Lush called in a doctor who advised admitting French to hospital for a few days so his condition could be monitored.

“At this juncture there are no plans to send for a replacement,” Mr Lush said.

French was hit on the chest during the match against Victoria in Melbourne last week and then contracted a viral infection. >
