New soccer sponsorship

PA Auckland Air New Zealand is replacing Rothmans as sponsor of the New Zealand Football Association’s national league competition. The sponsorship, announced yesterday, will be worth more than $600,000 over the next two years. The move is expected to reduce significantly the heavy costs, particularly travel, facing the 14 teams in the revamped league. The championship, which will start on March 22 and involves 182 matches over 26 rounds through to September 20, will be known as the Air New Zealand Soccer League.

It marks the end of 25 years involvement in soccer by Rothmans who

backed the first national league competition in 1970. Rothmans sponsorship for the 1986 season was worth $112,500. Air New Zealand’s Grant Lilly said he felt the financial security his company was offering the clubs would ensure the new league was a success. Air New Zealand had the right to extend its sponsorship for a further two years after the initial term. Travel and its related costs have long been one of the main concerns for clubs participating in the national league. The chairman of the New Zealand Football Association, Charlie Dempsey, said he was hoping for a long and happy relationship with the airline.
