Canterbury Belle on show for Wingatui race crowd tomorrow

By J. J. BOYLE Canterbury Belle will give a Wingatui race crowd its first and probably only opportunity to see a smoothly efficient galloping machine in action in the Otago Racing Club’s James Hazlett Stakes tomorrow.

Two lead-up races this time up and in the meantime a reassuring win at race trials last week-end should have thoroughly fitted the Riccarton-trained speedster for anything that might be demanded of her at 1600 m in the first leg of the Otago Racing Club’s T.A.B. double.

She goes into tomorrow’s race as winner of nine races and over $400,000 and nothing short of ill-luck in the running or an out of character below par effort could defy her effort to give weight all round in a handicap with a range of only 5.5 kg. To assist her cause Canterbury Belle will have the assistance of Grant Davison, who is having a golden summer on South Island courses and returned to the head of the jockeys’ list by landing eight winners over the C.J.C. and Tapanui meetings last week-end. Noble Note, so often Davison’s mount in previous seasons, is closest to Canterbury Belle in the weights and might be closest to her in the finish.

There were encouraging signals from his fifth placing over 1200 m, a distance short of his best, at Riccarton last week. Sea Swift is coming back to 1600 m after a freshener that followed her unplaced run in the New Zealand Cup, but the Gore-trained Chook a Rook has had no such strenuous demands made on him. This will be only his third start for the season, and he has gloss on his form as a last-start winner at the Southland meeting.

Try To Stop Me, like Canterbury Belle, will be making his first appearance at Wingatui tomorrow, and the imported son of Sharpen Up could pose problems for the “colonials” in the Crofters Arms Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double.

His English record argued of a middle distance talent, and perhaps the only question mark over his chance tomorrow is whether he has improved enough with his one lead-up run to meet the demands of 2200 m. That run was over 1600 m at Riccarton last Friday, and it yielded a close third. Seasoned runners perhaps best able to capitalise on any shortfall in Try To Stop Me’s level of performance are Sparkling Eyes, Giveaway, and Noble Ella. If it comes up wet Hwyl will also join the list of fancies.
