Laud Eulogy due for another win

Special correspondent Auckland Laud Eulogy is due another win and it could well come his way at the Waipa Racing Club’s meeting at Te Awamutu tomorrow. Unraced until a late four-year-old, Laud Eulogy ended last season, when five, with seven wins. He has yet to be successful this term and tomorrow’s Allegra Park Rose Town Handicap will be his seventh start. Though unable to win, Laud Eulogy has been placed in the first five home in all except one of his six races so far this season — once second, once third, twice fourth and once fifth. One of his fourth placings was last time, behind Beau de Zure, over 1575 metres at Ellerslie on November 25, and it represented a fair effort because he had to race wide. Laud Eulogy carried 57kg in that one and, favoured by this present scale of weights he is down to 53.5 kg. Cool Deal, with 52.5 kg also seems nicely placed, perhaps she will be the hardest for Laud Eulogy to beat. Now a four-year-old, Cool Deal recorded the same number of wins as Laud Eulogy last season and managed some worthwhile minor placings as well. this season. The closest Cool Deal has finished this time is third, behind Diamond Lover and Sir Gareth over 1200 metres at Pukekohe on October 18 — her first race after a winter spell. There was plenty of merit, though, in her last-start sixth placing, behind The Filbert in Te Aroha’s weight-for-age Potter Stakes because she played a major role in the pacemaking, and The Filbert won in 1:34.42s for the 1600 metres. It is doubtful whether they will race as hard tomorrow though Clear Gold is capable still of running a solid 1600 m, so is the lightweight, Brazen Face. Clear Gold showed up prominently with 300 metres to run in the Potter Stakes before weakening to come in eighth. The time before he finished third behind Alynda and Snabben in a fast 1200 metres at Pukekohe. He is far from being a spent force.
