Linwood fire

Sir, —I wish to clarify any confusion relating to the blackboard symbol of the Linwood High School fire and witchcraft (December 12). I am currently undertaking a study of witches’ covens and similar spirituality groups in Christchurch. From my understanding of this type of belief, it is ridiculous to suggest that destruction such as the arson at Linwood High is the work of witches. Witchcraft is based on love for nature and life in all its forms. It is a valid and constructive belief system that harms no one or thing. Fear of witches arises from fear of anything that is different. Their imagined evil doings have been the justification for the murder of millions of women during the witch-hunts. Claiming that the Linwood fire is evidence of the work of witches is not only contrary to the tenets of witchcraft, but it also contributes to centuries of persecution and hysteria about witches. — Yours, etc.,

Y. WISEWITCH, Religious Studies Dept, University of Canterbury, December 14, 1986.
