Molesworth
Sir, —The precedent has already been set for the Department of Conservation to manage farm parks (Puponga and Te Paki). Why should it ndt work for Molesworth? A developmentoriented Landcorp might destroy plants and animals even before their discovery. Valley floor wetlands and tussocklands could be decimated. Throughout Molesworth plants yet unnamed have been found. The management plan proposals emphasise the need for comprehensive nature surveys. Long overdue public access improvements are also proposed, albeit timidly, in the plan. With total Landcorp control, these may never happen. A Department of Conservation stewardship, with leasing to Landcorp of grazing rights over those areas not required for nature, water and soil conservation and recreation, would ensure the multiple interests of the public were protected. — Yours, etc.,
BERNIE CALDER December 6, 1986.
