C.O.G.S. grants for Canterbury

The Community Organisation Grants Scheme will distribute $436,800 to volunteer groups in Canterbury. A total of $4.2 million will be distributed nationally over a six-month period. The interim distribution committee in Canterbury received 117 applications for grants, of which 59 were successful. The committee gave priority to small, local groups with little access to other forms of funding, said the C.O.G.S. community worker in Canterbury, Ms Sue Smith. The target groups identified by the Government had been Maori and Pacific Island people, women, the elderly, children, the disabled and those isolated in rural areas, she said. Most of the grants in Canterbury will go towards salaries, volunteer expenses and overheads.
