South Africa

Sir, —Vernon Wilkinson refers to me in his letter (December 9) as wanting to “muddy the controversy over racism by widening it to include the whole field of human rights.” I would point out that I have not been writing under the heading “South Africa” but under “Double standards.” My letters have been relevant to that subject and have sought to show that double standards, selective morality and questionable motives do exist. I have associated with people in South Africa who have shown

their love and concern for Africans in a way that probably few of your correspondents have done, by living and working sacrificially among them. Their views as to the best solutions to the South African problem would, I think, differ from those of most of your correspondents. In the meantime I am not prepared to jump on to the popular band-waggon which could well become a juggernaut to crush Africans. — Yours, etc., H. G. ORAM. December 15, 1986.
