If any member of the public has a query regarding legal services and availability of lawyers at any time during the holidays, would they please ring SEEKERS at 792-720. • AKAROA COUNTY COUNCIL ~ PROHIBITION OF CONSUMPTION OR POSSESSION OF INTOXICATING LIQUOR ON STREETS OR AKAROA NEW YEAR’S EVE PUBLIC NOTICE IS hereby given in accordance with the provisions of the Local Government Act 1974 that the Council has decided to prohibit the consumption of liquor or the bringing of liquor or empty liquor containers on to the following streets of Akaroa between the hours of 4 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 1986 and 4 a.m. on Thursday, January 1, 1987: Rue Lavaud, Beach Road, Rue Jolie, Rue Balguerie, Rue Brittan and Rue Croix. The prohibition also applies to the Akaroa Beach and Recreation Ground. The powers conferred on the Police to enforce the conditions of the prohibition of liquor on the specified streets of Akaroa as imposed by the Council are as follows: (a) Any Constable may, without warrantfl) Arrest any person whom he finds committing an offence against the prohibition imposed. (2) During the period of the prohibition arrest any person whom he has reasonable cause to suspect of having committed such an offence and (3) Subject to (b) and (c) below search any parcel, package, bag, case or other container in the possession of any person in, entering or about to enter the defined areas above mentioned in respect of which any prohibition relating to liquor is for the time being in force, for the purpose of ascertaining whether or not the parcel, package, bag, case or container contains any liquor or any empty liquor container. (b) Before exercising the power of search conferred in (3) above the Constable shall inform the person in possession of the parcel, package, bag, case or other container of the provisions of (c) below and in any case where that person is in possession of the item in the defined areas of Akaroa give that person a reasonable opportunity of removing the item therefrom. (c) No Constable may exercise the power of search conferred in (3) above if the person in possession of the parcel, package, bag, case or other container removes it from or, as the case may be, refrains from taking it on to the defined area of Akaroa and leaves it outside the defined area until the period of prohibition ceases. (d) Any Constable may seize and remove any liquor and its container or any other liquor container that he has reasonable cause to believe would be evidence of the commission of an offence against the prohibition as herein defined. (e) Any liquor or container seized pursuant to (d) above and in respect of which any person is convicted of an offence, together, in the case of any liquor, with the container of the liquor, shall be deemed to be forfeited to the Crown and shall be destroyed. PENALTY: The maximum penalty that may be imposed for an offence against the prohibition of liquor in the defined areas of Akaroa hereby imposed is a fine of $5OO.
