Table tennis upsets
NZPA-Reuter Tokyo The European men’s champion, Joergen Persson, of Sweden, and the women’s No. 2, Fliura Bulatova, were ousted in early upsets in the Europe-Asia table tennis tournament at Tokyo. China’s 1985 champion, Yang Jianhua, beat the second seed, Persson, 16-21, 21-15, 16-21, 21-14, 21-13, in the second round.
Brigitte Thiriet, of France, ranked fifteenth in Europe,
surprisingly beat the third seed, Bulatova, 13-21, 21-19, 21-10, 15-21, 21-18 in another hard-fought second-round match.
The Chinese top seeds, Jiang Jialiang, the men’s world champion, and Jiao Zhimin, the women’s world No. 2, moved smoothly into the third round.
Jiang beat Tibor Klampar, of Hungary, 21-14, 21-14, 2119, and Jiao beat Japan’s Kiyomi Ishida, 21-16, 21-5, 217.
