Govt to assist lessons at home

PA Wellington Parents who supervise their children’s correspondence lessons will receive financial assistance from next year, the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, has announced. Parents would receive $7OB for the first child they supervised, $602 for the second, $496 for the third and $354 for each additional child.

Adjustment would be made to compensate for GST.

“I would be the first to admit that this is not a great amount to compensate parents for the time and facilities they provide for the students of the school,” Mr Marshall said at the Correspondence School break-up ceremony.

“But I am sure you will agree that it does give a tangible recognition of the very significant role the Correspondence School parents play in the educa-' tion of their children.” It established the principle that the Government did not take parental help for granted, Mr Marshall said.

The payments would be made to guardians and parents who supervised full time pupils’ work in the home for at least a term. Parents of pupils who attended Correspondence School units, whose supervision was already being funded, would not be eligible.
