Bill on graduated driver’s licence
PA Wellington A bill extending powers of arrest to traffic officers and providing for a graduated driver’s licence system was brought to Parliament yesterday. The Transport (Law Reform) Bill also imposed requirements for the drivers of passenger service vehicles, but not taxis, and heavy vehicles
to carry log books to record the hours they drive. The Minister of Transport, Mr Prebble, said the graduated licence was aimed at young people, who figured “alarmingly” in traffic statistics. Opposition members did not oppose the bill, but questioned some clauses which they said were less satisfactory than others.
