Cricket tournament
PA Wellington Wellington and Central Districts face a nerve-wracking time today as they attempt to secure the advantage necessary to win the Prudential Trophy national under-20 cricket tournament at Lower Hutt.
Wellington led Central by just over three points at the start of the final round of matches yesterday but both teams found the going tough in their respective matches. Wellington was dismissed for 183 by last year’s winner, Canterbury, at Te Whiti Park, which may not be sufficient to earn first innings points, and across the same park Central spent most of the day in the field while an improving Northern Districts reached 214 in their first innings. At stumps Wellington had Canterbury 40 for two in
reply. In the Wellington innings the opener, Stuart Robb, batted through for an unbeaten 59.
At Fraser Park Otago and Auckland provided the day’s individual highlights with Michael Lamont (Otago) scoring 128, including 12 boundaries, and the off-spin bowler, Martin Kimber, returning figures of five for 79. Scores.—
