Schools tennis championships

The top-seeded Matthew Jenman was knocked out in the quarter-final round of the third form singles championship by the unseeded Duncan Macintosh, in the Racket and Restrings-Fisher Canterbury secondary schools tennis championships played at Wilding Park yesterday. Macintosh, after disposing of the favourite in two straight sets, continued his winning streak by beating his semi-final opponent, Robert McCarthy, 6-1, 7-6. In the open boys’ singles quarter-finals, a surprise win came from Brendon Furness, who ousted his doubles partner, Justin Russell, seeded fourth.

Rosina Brooks, from Timaru, almost managed to topple the third-seeded senior Elmwood player, Ann Culhane, in their open singles quarter-final, finally bowing out in three close sets.

But later that day Brooks more than made up for this loss, and, partnered by Mark Milburn, beat the secondseeded mixed combination of Joanna Lake and Hamish Jamieson in a very exciting match. Brooks and Milburn finally prevailed after a third set tie-breaker, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6.
