Timaru Cup target for Random Chance

By

ALEX McMILLAN

The $15,250 D.B. Timaru Cup (1600 m at Washdyke on December 27, is the immediate target for the talented Wingatui four-year-old, Random Chance, according to his trainer, Brian Anderton. Anderton said last evening that the son of Three Legs was forced to miss this week’s $15,000 James Hazlett Stakes at Wingatui because of a bruised wither, a minor injury which has prevented the entire from doing any serious work since his sprint win at Beaumont earlier this month. “We have had him working off a lead and he

has not missed a lot. We should have him ready for Washdyke,” Anderton said last evening. He added that an $BOOO 2000 m event at Kurow, two days after Washdyke, could also be on his programme. The race is restricted to four year olds and has a 58kg maximum weight. Safely through his holiday assignments, Random Chance will be set for the $lOO,OOO Jarden Mile at Trentham on January 24. A likely travelling companion to Wellington for Random Chance is his stablemate, Tourneur; which, depending on his progress in the next few weeks, could contest the

$250,000 Foster’s Wellington Cup. Tourneur, a last start Beaumont winner in the hands of Grant Davison, will race next in the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap at Wingatui on Boxing Day, continuing his preparation for the $25,000 Invercargill Gold Cup (2600 m on January 5.

A satisfactory performance in the latter event would confirm a Wellington Cup attempt, according to Anderton, who is currently handling a large team of youngsters, including Red Sophia, a two-year-old sister to champion race mare, Our Sophia.
