Afghanistan

Sir,—An over-eager willingness to give a too-ready credence to any adverse reports about the Soviet Union commands no respect for such credulity. Based on nothing more substantial than a Danish surgeon’s unsupported word, T. R. Loudon (November 21) exceeds permissible limits with his own interpolations embroidering the surgeon’s reports. T. R. Loudon claims that Dr Hansen went on a medical “factfinding” tour. These are Mr Loudon’s words, as are “He found indisputable evidence of

the extensive use of napalm against civilian populations.” Dr Hansen qualifies this with, “...

we were not in the vicinity of definite battle zones,” hardly “indisputable evidence.” Nor are bombs disguised as butterflies, pens and toy cars “well-docu-mented Soviet practice in Afghanistan.” Such allegations will prove on proper, impartial investigation to be of the same order as the “yellow rain” of the alleged “Soviet chemical warfare in South-East Asia” — pollen and bees’ faeces.—-Yours, etc., M. CREEL. November 21, 1986.
