Rugby diplomacy
Sir,—l see that Brian Lochore, commenting on the goodwill visit of the French Prime Minister to the All Blacks, takes some pride in the thought that rugby played, or is playing, an important part in a France-New Zealand reconciliation. I seem to remember hearing from rugby supporters that politics should not interfere with sport, but perhaps they are allowed to if they further the interests of rugby. However, rugby diplomacy wins a few and loses a few, as our rugby contacts with South Africa do not seem to have been a howling success in reconciling the two warring races in that country.—Yours, etc., VERNON WILKINSON. November 25, 1986.
