People as assets
Sir, —The comments of C. D. Ward (November 25) concerning people as assets typify the average New Zealander’s ignorance of the realities of government. What is good for New Zealand as a nation is not necessarily popular with the electorate. In an economic sense, no-one is born as an asset —■ rather as a liability. Individual ability and perseverance, combined with circumstance, ascertain his/her economic worth. C. D. Ward’s comments are, sadly, all too common in New Zealand at present. Warm and friendly New Zealanders may be but, when conducting interviews, for example, for a position of crane operator, these qualities do not compensate for an inability to drive the crane. If New Zealand is to have a prosperous future its inhabitants must be doers rather than people wishing or needing to be protected from the realities of life in the 1980 s. —- Yours, etc.,
N. J. JACKSON and T. D. THOMSON November 26, 1986.
