Lioness dies in coma

An Orana Park lioness, Angel, died on Sunday after four days in a deep coma.

Angel, who recently gave birth to two female cubs, was found in the coma on Thursday morning, and failed to respond to four days of intensive care and treatment. The cause of her death is not known, but samples from a post-mortem examination have been

sent to the Ministry of Agriculture for analysis.

The lioness was nine years old and one of the first lions born at the park. She had previously raised two litters of cubs successfully and was considered one of Orana’s best mothers.

Fortunately, her two 14week cubs had already started the weaning process and have adjusted reasonably well, but their

integration into the pride will now be far more complicated and timeconsuming.

The park staff hope that one of the other lionesses will adopt the role of “aunty” and protect the cubs when they are introduced into the pride.

While the cubs are being introduced it will not be possible to have them on display.
