Forklift trucks a hazard: researchers

PA Palmerston North Forklift trucks are a significant hazard in New Zealand factories, researchers told a congress on occupational safety and health in Palmerston North. Colin Cryer, of the University of Otago, and Cara Fleming, of the Wellington Hospital Board, releasing details of their analysis of 10 years of work-related fatal injuries in the manufacturing industries, said there were an estimated 434 forklift injuries in 1983 and 1984 which resulted in claims paid by the Accident Compensation Corpora-

tion. Forklift drivers were the occupational group with the highest a rate of injury of 16:1000 a year, but the researchers said attention should also be given to those working near forklift trucks. Although forklift trucks had a caged driver compartment to protect the driver from falling loads, nothing was provided for protecting the driver in event of the machine tipping over, they said. They suggested a harness could hold the driver inside the cab, preventing them from being thrown out and crushed.
