Luggate dam to be delayed
PA Wellington A decision on the proposed Luggate dam project could be delayed for a year or more because hydro-electric power supplies already would meet anticipated future demands.
The chairman of the Electricity Corporation’s establishment board, Mr John Fernyhough, in an interview on Radio New Zealand’s "Morning Report,” said the hydro-de-velopment of the Luggate dam was not urgent in spite of the Government’s request for the work to go ahead.
The Government said last month it would ask for the corporation’s decision as soon as possible so that workers on the Clyde dam could continue working on Clutha River projects.
Mr Fernyhough said he believed the matter had been referred to a Cabinet sub-committee and the Government was not attempting to set priorities for the corporation. The corporation still had to evaluate the capacities of the North and South Islands before “rushing ahead” with the Luggate decision.
