Wellington wins cricket

PA Auckland Wellington beat Auckland by five wickets in a Data General limited over cricket match at Eden Park yesterday.

Auckland, losing the toss and batting first on a “greentop” was dismissed for 118. Only John Reid (22), and Martin Snedden (31 not out) had any answer to the Wellington attack. Danny Morrison and Willie Watson began bowling as if defending 118 was not beyond Auckland.

Morrison's outswinger re-

moved Robert Vance without a run on the board and Watson beat the bat frequently.

Wellington's opener, Ross Verry, in only his second game for the province, played for 55 minutes and almost 14 overs before he scored his first run.

However, he and Andrew Jones (27) did their job by frustrating the Auckland attack.

Tim Richie (36) and Evan Gray (30) steered Wellington steadily to the brink of victory.
