Post Office waits for asbestos to go

Post Office workers will not install a new telephone system in the Christchurch Civil Defence headquarters until asbestos is removed from the ceilings. The Canterbury Civil Defence officer, Mr Laurie Elder, said yesterday that a private contractor had been employed to remove the asbestos. Although asbestos had been found in the ceilings of four rooms, it would be removed only from the two that the Post Office workers had to use. Mr Elder said the asbestos was only dangerous

i' workers drilled holes in it, or somehow made it create a fine dust In the course of their work, the Post Office workers would do this. However, the asbestos in the two remaining rooms would not be any danger to staff. Removing the asbestos would cost about $5OOO, Mr Elder said. Work had started at the beginning of the month, and was expected to continue until early December. Mr Elder said the delay in installing the new telephone system would not cause any problems.
