Obituary Mr W. J. T. Lochead
Mr W. J. T. (Bill) Lochhead, a well-known figure in trotting circles in MidCanterbury, died last Sunday. He was 83. Mr Lochhead farmed in the Mount Somers district and it was there he first developed an interest in trotting, standing the American-bred horse, Sonoma Harvester, for a time. Sonoma Harvester sired some capable trotters and it was horses of that gait which particularly interested Mr Lochhead. He shod his own horses and was recognised as an expert in that field.
He bred and raced many horses, being particularly successful with
his small team after shifting to Ashburton. Probably his best winner was Supervise, which won a New Zealand Trotting Free-For-All. He also bred Hidden Note and raced him successfully before selling him. Hidden Note won the 1947 Dominion Handicap. Wise Game, the winner of four races, was the last winner prepared by Mr Lochhead. Other winners which he bred or raced included Betty Thorpe, Harvest Note, Grand Slam, Erin’s Lad, Civic, Honora’s Pride, Super Note, Garryowen, Lightning Note, Scottish Note, Super View, Lightning Scott, Super Glow, Cloudy
View, Dollarwise, Be Wise and Lord Zetland.
