Caroline Face climbed
PA Timaru A Mount Cook National Park mountaineer, Maryann Hobbs, has climbed Mount Cook via the icy and arduous Caroline Face. With another park mountaineer, Mike Roberts, she made the ascent last week, rangers have confirmed. She is thought to be the first woman to make the
2000 m climb. The climb took a day and a half in excellent conditions, the pair having set off mid-afternoon to birouac one-third of the way up before going to the top and the Empress Hut the next day. The Caroline Face was the last major face on Mount Cook to be climbed, almost 20 years ago. It has been climbed many times since.
