Labour Youth decries policy
The youth wing of the Labour Party has criticised the Government’s policy of phasing out subsidised work schemes. The unemployed could not be left to cope by themselves until the new “economic dawn” arrived, said the president of Labour Youth, Mr Steven Bright, in Christchurch yesterday. “The demise of the socalled “sunset industries” is forcing many people on to the scrap heap and these people are not find-
ing sufficient jobs in new industries,” he said. The concept of work schemes was still valid even though the Project Employment Programme established by the National Party might have been abused, he said. Work schemes were particularly important for the young unemployed because they established work habits, maintained a sense of dignity, and taught work skill, Mr Bright said.
