Lawyer satisfied with claims
Mr Nigel Hampton, the defence lawyer for John Bennett, said yesterday he was satisfied with the substantiation of claims he made in the High Court about his client’s early life.
His information about John Bennett’s youth was based on various probation and psychiatric reports dating back to the early 19705, and included interviews with members of the family, he said. Mr Hampton said he had not spoken to his client’s father or stepmother but there was no particular, reason for this. "I did not even know
where they lived,” he said.
He also said he had not spoken to Mr Bennett’s first wife (John’s mother) during this case, although he had talked to her in 1979 and 1974.
Mr Bennett said yesterday that he had been to see Mr Hampton at his office, shortly before John was due to have a psychiatric examination. Mr Hampton had been busy and he had seen him for only a minute, but Mr Hampton had given the impression that he (Mr Bennett) should not be involved in the case, Mr Bennett said.
