Becker bounces Edberg

NZPA-AFP Tokyo The Wimbledon champion, Boris Becker, survived a tense first-set tiebreaker to beat Stefan Edberg, of Sweden, in straight sets in the final of the $U5375,000 Seiko Super men’s tennis tournament yesterday. Becker prevailed, 7-5, in a head-to-head tiebreak struggle then crushed Edberg, 6-1, in the second set to win the match.

Earlier, Edberg had used his fine serve-and-volley game to oust the top-seeded Ivan Lendl, the United States and French Open champion, 7-5, 6-1 in a semi-final.

Edberg’s win evened their career meetings at 3-3.

In the other semi-final, the 18-year-old Becker, who was seeded second, needed two hours and 25 minutes to defeat the fourth-seeded, 34-year-old, Jimmy Connors, 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-3. Lendl later combined with Andres Gomez, of Ecuador, to beat Australia’s Broderick Dyke and Wally Masur 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in a doubles semi-final match.
