Errors prove costly

A spate of errors late in its game against G.T. United (Ashburton) yesterday cost Richmond over-all victory in the Shirley Lodge Softball Classic at Aranui High School. G.T. United was thus able to win the tournament on a countback. Over the two days both teams lost one game. Against G.T. United the host club, Richmond, looked in control when it maintained a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth innings. But three errors in the field helped United get three runners home to win the match, 3-2. On the Saturday Richmond had used its under--19 pitcher, Steven Phillips, in the game against Rangers and he did a great job, taking six strike-outs and conceded no hits and no walks. For good measure he batted .666. The top batters for the various club teams included Mike Tlmu (Richmond), Doug Chee (Evergreens), Wayne Rauhihi (Grey Valley), Eric Johnson (G.T. United), Graham Caddigan (Zingari). The women’s section was won by. Richmond which was unbeaten in its three games, amassing 33 runs.
