Matangi rider scores all-the-way victory

PA Hamilton The Matangi rider, Vaughn Jefferis, scored an all-the-way win in the Waikato horse trials’ inaugural one-day trial at the Crossing, Litchfield yesterday. Jefferis and his 10-year-old gelding Sandalwood, in their first major competition, took the lead after Saturday’s dressage and held yesterday to head off Bulls rider, Sally Dalrymple, on Sky Command.

Jefferis (55.5 penalties) had two rails in hand over Dalrymple in the showjumping and had a clear round despite the appalling conditions.

Ram held off during the crosscountry and the big

course was in good condition. The first two horses on the advanced track, Jefferis’ other ride, Silver Bridge, and Tinks Pottinger’s Arpac Graphic, both looked impressive over their fences but were eliminated after taking the wrong course at the water.

Starting early was a disadvantage because word got back to the later riders that the line most planned to take was wrong — too late for Jefferis and Pottinger. Feilding’s Andrew Scott and Muir of Ord also provided some excitement when, after a spectacular round, they took the wrong final fence. <•
