Masters on court
. Several well-known squash names of the past will be wielding rackets during the New Zealand Masters championships at the Christchurch club over Labour Day weekend. Among them are the former New Zealand representatives, Peter Dibley (Northland), and Jenny Webster (Auckland), now both into their forties and still playing top-quality squash. They are the top seeds for the men’s 45 to 49 years and the women’s 40 to 44 years respectively. Dibley, who represented New Zealand at the 1967 and 1969 world championships, was still playing No. 1 for Northland in the national interdistricts teams’ event last year. Three times the New Zealand women’s champion, Webster went on to win the world veterans title in Perth in 1983. Virtually all the grades (five men’s and four women’s) are headed by A-graders. The top men’s seed in the 35 to 39 years grade is Bryan Simpson, a former South Island champion who has represented several different districts, including Canterbury and Northland, in the national teams’ events. Other No. 1 seeds include Lyn Sparks (Canterbury, men’s 40 to 44 years), a former provincial representative
squash, rugby and cricket player; Rob Roche (Auckland, men’s over 55), the instigator of Masters squash in New Zealand; Susie Simcock (Auckland, women’s 45 to 49 years), the former New Zealand women’s team manager; and Viv Hargreaves (Canterbury, men’s 50 to 54), the 1972 North Island champion and 1983 New Zealand Veterans champion. This is the fifth Nev/ Zealand Masters championships and a feature will be the inaugural masters’ teams event. The five teams entered are (in seeding order)
Auckland, Canterbury, Wellington, Northland and Central. Canterbury will be represented in the teams’ event by Sparks, Hargreaves, Bruce Marriott, Barry Gardiner, Laurie Wilson, Len Reese, Kathy Hargreaves, Agnes Huriwai and Saskia O’Brien. The tournament, which is jointly sponsored by Hertz and Aber, will begin on Friday evening with the individual championships which end on Monday. The teams’ event will be contested from Tuesday until Thursday next week.
