Sumner to get retirement complex

The retirement complex to be built by Lane Walker Rudkin, Ltd, at the corner of Burgess Street and Marriner Street, Sumner, on land zoned Industrial 1, has been approved by the Christchurch City Council, subject to certain conditions. Four objections to the proposal were heard by the Town Planning Hearings Panel on September 25 when a report was made by Mr David Clark, senior town planner. The site is occupied by a collection of old, rather dilapidated and now disused buildings which were used by the Bradford Dyeworks. It is the only Industrial 1 zone in Sumner. The retirement complex will cater for 41

people and will include communal facilities.

Objections were made on the grounds that there was a need for industrial land in Sumner; a retirement complex could be built in any residential zone; it would undermine the integrity of the whole industrial zone; and there would be a lack of privacy for surrounding dwellings. Consent was granted to the application for the complex on condition that the site was landscaped in accordance with a plan approved by the director of parks and recreation and that no windows be included on the southeast side at - floor level. Mr John Milligan appeared for. Lane, Walker, Rudkin, Ltd.
