Expo ends with bang, whimper
NZPA-Reuter Vancouver Expo 86 ended yesterday with a bang and a song after months of unexpectedly large crowds that could not erase a multi-million-dollar deficit. A huge fireworks display on Monday evening marked the beginning of the end, and at mid-after-noon yesterday the 54 pavilions closed. Visitors, employees and volunteers then marched through the 70ha site in an informal parade, winding up at a stadium, where -they were entertained by a band concert. The fair logged about 22 million visits — nine million more than originally projected — since it was opened on May 2 by Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Expo counted visits rather than individuals because it sold three-day and unlimited passes as well as single admission tickets. Canadians were proud of the fair, but were also concerned about itssUS224 million ($441 million) deficit.
