Jamaican P.M. wants out

NZPA-Reuter Kingston Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Mr Edward Seaga, has said he does not intend to seek re-election, but officials of his Jamaica Labour Party (J.L.P.) are trying to persuade him to change his mind. Mr Seaga told J.L.P. leaders yesterday that he would not seek to retain the party’s leadership at a conference next month, and that he would step down as Prime Minister in August, 1987. The Cabinet was scheduled to hold its regular weekly meeting today without Mr Seaga in order to discuss the resignation issue fully. Mr Seaga’s decision all but sets the date for General Elections, which the Opposition has been demanding after the J.L.P.’s heavy defeat in municipal polls on July 29.
