Govt case in transplant row debate
PA Wellington The Government last evening took steps to put its side of the debate in the heart transplant row. The Acting Minister of Health, Mr Marshall, issued a two page statement outlining the Government’s view on the issue. “There has been quite a bit of heat about it,” he said. While the statement contained little new information, it said the Government was not opposed in principle to heart transplant surgery in New Zealand. But it would be irresponsible to commit health funds without adequately researching the
issues, it said. It also pointed out there would be problems finding sufficient donors. “There is little point in establishing a heart transplant unit in New Zealand if patients are to die while waiting for a suitable donor heart to become available. “If that was in fact the case, it would clearly be preferable, although possibly more costly, to continue sending patients to Australia where a much larger donor pool is available. “Patients there can often be matched with a suitable heart with less delay than they could in New Zealand.” i-
