Women may soon get combat duties

Wellington reporter Women may soon be given equality of opportunity in the Armed Forces, including combat duties. The Minister of De'fence, Mr O’Flynn, told Parliament yesterday that a report on the subject had been prepared for a Cabinet committee which was expected to consider it and any recommendations next week. Several important steps had already been taken to improve career opportunities for Service women, he said. The Navy had a rule of

not allowing women to go to sea but was now proposing a. year’s trial involving 16 ratings who would be sent in the Monowai to do all the duties of their male counterparts. Also, responding to instructions from Mr O’Flynn “some months ago,” the Air Force had recently proposed a scheme under which eight women pilots and four women navigators would be trained. Mr O’Flynn said he envisaged this as the first chapter in a “continuing programme.”
