N.Z.S.O. violinist chosen
Mr Donald Armstrong has been appointed as associate concertmaster of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Mr Armstrong was selected from more than 80 applicants for the position, which has been vacant for two years. Wellington-born Armstrong began his career as a trainee with the Schola Musica in 1974. He joined the N.Z.S.O. in 1977 and played with them for a year before leaving for eight years overseas. For the first four years he studied at the Mannes College, New York, and the New England Conservatory, Boston. Summers were spent at the Aspen Music Festival, and after a further year playing with a string quartet he left for Denmark as principal second violin of the Tivoli Gardens Orchestra, Copenhagen. Six months later he was appointed Concertmaster of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, where he has been for the past two years. Mr Armstrong will take up his new position with the orchestra early next year.
