Policing and council
Sir, — I am intrigued that Cr Clark’s ride in a police car has brought about the issue of a number of Labour “initiatives in community safety and welfare.” Over the present term of the City Council while all of us as councillors were looking for ideas and solutions, none of these thoughts of Cr Clark surfaced. We thus lost the chance of investigating them further. If we had known that a ride in a police car would have stimulated such a contribution, I am sure we would have taken steps to arrange it for him earlier. Mind you, the plans even on preliminary analysis do not look like solving anything much — we do not need more committees but better attitudes in the minds of all age groups. Perhaps after these elections we can get down to genuinely constructive efforts once more. — Yours, etc.,
JOHN BURN. September 28, 1986.
