Junior council
Sir, — Labour’s mayoral candidate, Mr Alex Clark, asserts that a Labour-controlled City Council would introduce a junior council to replace the secondary school council (September 27). As a member of the Christchurch (Secondary Schools) Youth Council, I would like to state that our
Youth Council does not come under the direction of the City Council. The only City Council involvement is that of providing a committee room for our meetings, and funding our administration costs — as the council does for other community groups. The Youth Council has students to chair its own meetings, and all decisions are made by our student members. Funding for projects and activities comes from fund-raising, grants, and commissions from our studentrun I.D. card scheme. For Mr Clark to claim to be able to get rid of our independent Youth Council, seemingly with a stroke of a pen, shows exactly what kind of an attitude it is that makes most young people feel “alienated from the City Council.” — Yours, etc., LEWIS K. BROWN. September 27, 1986.
