Pelagic preference refused by Govt

PA Wellington The Government said yesterday it would not make a special case for Chatham Islanders wanting access to their region’s deep-water fish resources.

The Minister of Fisheries, Mr Moyle, said that “no special or preferential” allocations would be made to any of the islanders who had put forward deep-sea fishing proposals. Allocations and particularly increases in allowable catches would be made to “all applicants in the Chatham Islands and iiu, other parts of New Zepfand,” Mr Moyle said. "This does not mean

that the Government is indifferent to or unmindful of the broader social and economic problems experienced by the Chathams. “In this instance, however, the Government is of the view that it would not be appropriate to make specific exceptions for the Chatham Islands in the deep-water fishing area, and especially in terms of the proposals that have been submitted.” A spokesman for Mr Moyle said a number of applications had been received from islanders, some of which involved processing deep-water fish on the islands.
