‘Local control’ of electricity

Electricity supply should continue to be controlled by local authorities, says the Mayor of Riccarton, Mr Richard Harrington. Mr Harrington was speaking at a meeting of the council’s electricity meeting last evening.

The committee discussed future changes in the electricity supply industry resulting from the Electricity Division’s being made a corporation. Mr Harrington said he believed that the electricity supply was one of the

main functions of local government, and that the council could give consumers better service than a power board could in a metropolitan area.

He said the Christchurch City Council held the same opinion, although the Waimairi District Council did not, but the Waimairi viewpoint was changing. Mr Harrington said the council had to work to ensure that, whatever happened in local body amalgamation, electricity supply stayed in the hands of local councils.
