New exchange for Kaiapoi
Wellington reporter Kaiapoi will get a new computerised telephone exchange to replace the existing exchange, to cost about $1.5 million. The Postmaster-Gen-eral, Mr Hunt, said the project involved a 34 sq m extension to the present exchange building and the replacement of the older technology equipment with modern electronic S.P.C. (stored programme controlled) equipment. Kaiapoi’s old equipment had now reached its capacity and a small extension was being installed to meet demand until the cutover to S.P.C. in 1989. The extension would be introduced early next year.
When complete, the new exchange would have a service capacity for some 4100 subscribers, he said.
