Imprisonment for debt
Sir,—The imprisonment of the mother of young children for debt — a chief creditor being a lawyer owed $5OO — which has raised such a public outcry, emphasises once again the urgent need of a State legal system in New Zealand. Until legal aid is available to all, irrespective of ability to pay, there can be no justice in this country. I am amazed that, with so much legal talent in the Cabinet, and with the Labour Government’s avowed intention to help the underdog, it has done nothing, as yet, to introduce a State legal system. — Yours, etc.,
S. L. DONALDSON. September 13, 1986.
