Kawerau mill to close today

PA Rotorua Lock-out notices for a further 600 workers and a temporary barrier across the main gates today will mark the official closing of the Tasman Pulp and Paper mill at Kawerau. The company has spent more than $1 million in mothballing the $1.5 billion plant for six months.

It has said the mill will not reopen again after 5 p.m. today unless its pulp and paper workers accept a six-point agreement

which the company says it requires for a “new era” at the mill. The mill site will not be deathly quiet after the official closing. About a third of Tasman’s salaried staff — those who have not gone on holiday — will have work for several weeks yet and security, firewatch, effluent, and electricity personnel will also have work for a while.
