Tunnel open to cyclists

Cyclists will bays the chance to ride through the Lyttelton road tunnel on Sunday. The tunnel will be closed to all other traffic for two 15-minute periods at II a.m. and 3 p.m. The ride is being organised by the Canterbury Cyclists’ Association to celebrate the beginning of spring and to give riders the chance to see the inside of the tunnel at a more leisurely speed than normal. Riders can meet in Victoria Square at 9.45 a.m. before riding to the tunnel or can gather behind the former control building at 10.45 a.m. Last year more than 200 cyclists took part in the ride. Walkers will' also have the chance to see inside the Lyttelton railway tunnel on Sunday. The Ferrymead railway organisation has arranged a public walk through the tunnel which will be open to walkers from 1 p.m. until 3.30 p.m.
