Support for tax campaign
A campaign to oppose the goods and services tax has continued to draw support since it got under way last Saturday, according to the organiser, Mr Wayne Boyd. That day a full-page advertisement opposing the tax appeared in "The Press.” It was paid for by several small Christchurch firms. Mr Boyd said yesterday that there was already enough money sent in by
people supporting the campaign to continue advertising the opposition to the tax. “We received about 40 slips cut out from the advertisement and most of them included money towards the Ge Stapo Tax,” he said. “I received about 30 phone calls on Monday, including two from North Island newspapers. “We are continuing to advertise against the tax
with Radio Avon and will probably place another large advertisement with a newspaper. So far no politician has approached me about the campaign.” Mr Boyd said that several people had also called at his Sumner garage to show their support for the campaign. Retailers who have not yet registered for the goods and services tax run the risk of being fined up to $lO,OOO says a Press
Association message from Wellington. They may have to pay GST on everything they sell from October 1, even if they have not charged their customer the tax, plus a fine of up to $lO,OOO. However, an Inland Revenue Department representative, Mr Jim Setter, said there would be some leniency in the initial stages of introducing GST.
