Covering of Halswell pool rejected

A proposal to enclose the Halswell pool has been rejected by the Paparua County Council. The possibility of a pool cover was investigated by the council as a worthy outlet for a bequest by a late supporter of the pool, Miss Nellie Cornes.

It was thought the cover would shelter pool patrons from a prevailing cold, easterly wind and extend the complex’s season. Funding for the cover, initially costed at $lOO,OOO, was to have come from the Halswell Swimming Club’s $12,000 portion of the bequest and the council’s $30,000 share, the rest coming from Government subsidies.

After recosting and visit to a similar enclosure in Westport, however, the council decided at its Monday council meeting against the idea. The main reason, said Cr David Shipley, was the new cost of $218,000, but other factors noted from the Westport pool had

also been taken into account, such as poor ventilation, a high noise level, and the smell of chlorine. The council also deferred an application by the Lincoln Golf Club to extend its course eight metres into the Lincoln cemetery. An increasing demand in burial plots at the cemetery was likely to continue with the recent closing of the Waimairi Cemetery, the council was told. It was decided to assess the request in two years if the space was still available. Next year’s Air Show at Christchurch airport may have run into a snag from roadside fruit sellers. In granting the Airport Authority permission to close or place “no-park-ing” signs in several roads round the airport during the show, the Rural District Council ruled that residents mupt be given unhindered access to their properties. The traffic controls

were being sought to avoid traffic jams during the show, on March 28 and 29, which several thousand people are expected to attend.

This was also the busiest time of year for fruit sellers, said Cr Shipley. Many of them depended on gate sales.

The matter was referred to the Airport Authority. A cycleway has been approved in principal for Kyle Park in Hornby. The council approved the reserves committee’s recommendation for cycle access from Waterloo Road through Kyle Park to Chalmers Street. The committee noted, however, that it did not support another Hornby cycleway which is being considered by the Hornby District Community Council. The proposed underpass between Chalmers Street and Waterloo Road is already a well used route by pedestrians but the cost was considered exorbitant.
