Plans for Bjelke Petersen scrapped
PA Auckland A plan by Auckland traffic officers to invite the controversial Queensland Premier, Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen, to a fund-raising dinner has been scrapped amid suggestions that his views could be politically embarrassing, the “New Zealand Herald” reported yesterday. The hard-line New Zea-land-born politician was considered a lively choice as guest speaker to a fund-raising lunch at Ellerslie racecourse in November. Members of a committee set up to plan festivities in greater Auckland proposed the name of Sir Joh because they believed his provocative views would ensure a sellout crowd at $5O a head, the “Herald" said.
