Doctors on top, says poll
By
CHRIS PETERS
NZPA Sydney Doctors are the most highly regarded workers in Australia, according to a pell published in Melbourne. The survey of 2000 people, which asked respondents to list the five occupations they held in highest regard, found that 74 per cent believed doctors’ work was the most respected — a similar
result to a survey in 1984. They were followed by the police with 55 per cent, nurses 53 per cent, teachers 48 per cent, farmers and graziers 35 per cent, scientists 29 per cent, lawyers 25 per cent and clergy 23 per cent. Behind them in order of regard are engineers, company executives, dentists, chemists, academics, Armed Forces personnel, and airline pilots. Well down the list are professional sportsmen and women on a 9 per
cent rating, followed by politicians, accountants, and radio and television announcers. At the bottom of the list on 4 per cent are newspaper editors. The survey, published in the “Melbourne Sun” newspaper, showed that the police in New South Wales had slipped down the list since 1984 but that the police over all in Australia remained in second place. Lawyers slipped from second to seventh spot
